Menbe’s Way is managed by the nonprofit Richmond Community Foundation, which through its donor-advised fund program employs expertise and extensive community knowledge to assist grant makers like Aklilu. In addition, Aklilu has been named to the Richmond Community Foundation board.

The foundation said these developments are a testament to the success of Aklilu’s restaurant and various local charity efforts, which include a $15,000 contribution to the new West County Family Justice Center in Richmond, a comprehensive resource and services center for victims of abuse and their families.

Menbe’s Way will help continue those efforts and launch additional programs.

A formerly homeless survivor of domestic violence, Aklilu has been using the popularity of her waterfront restaurant to help others. Earlier this year, she was honored with the prestigious Jefferson Award for her impactful public volunteerism.

Thanksgiving For The Needy

Over the last five years Menbe, with the help of her staff, and community volunteers including the Richmond Mayor, The City Manager, Chief of Police, and Fire Chief, has hosted over 6500 struggling veterans in her elegant restaurant for a free fine-dining meal. They are seated at tables set with china and crystal on white tablecloths, and served a traditional Thanksgiving Dinner with dignity and love. She provides a Health Fair where attendants can get free flu shoots and “goody bags” filled with personal care items along with a coupon for each family, good for 10 meals throughout the holiday season.

“Yes, You are Worthy” Mother’s Day Brunch

As a single mother, Menbe knows how difficult it can be to raise a family while being the sole provider. The “Yes, You are Worthy” Mother’s Day Brunch event is meant to empower mothers, single or married, to be the best that they can be for both the success of their family and themselves.  The Mother’s are chauffeured to a Beauty Salon where they are treated to beauty services and then brought to Salute E Vita to enjoy a delicious meal. The event ends with a motivational speech from Menbe as well as a community leader.

Menbe’s Etiquette Class

Menbe believes that good manners will take an individual very far in life. Knowing proper table etiquette provides students with confidence that translates into different areas of their lives.  She’s partnered with local school from all over the East Bay to provide monthly etiquette classes to students of all ages. Her etiquette classes include proper social and table manners as well as life coaching speeches by both Menbe and leaders of the community.

Support Local Community Programs

Menbe is proud to call Richmond home. That’s why she dedicates all her time and energy into supporting local organizations that have the same mission she does: to make the east bay a better home for everyone. Menbe’s Way has funded many projects including The Family Justice Center, The Richmond Art Center, the Richmond Police Activities League and many more.
